VIVA – VOICE QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

 1. Estimation of acidity of water

1. What is acidity?

Acidity is the measure of capacity of water to neutralise the bases.

2. What is the mineral acidity?

The volume of standard alkali required to neautralize a specific volume of water sample at pH 3.7 is called mineral acidity or methyl orange acidity.

3. What is the total acidity?

• The volume of standard alkali required to neutralise a specific volume of water sample at pH 8.3 is called total acidity or Phenolphthalein acidity.

4. What are the indictor(s) used in this process?

Phenolphthalein & methyl orange (or) mixed indictor

5. What is the role of indicators in acidity analysis?

Methyl orange gives orange colour in acidic range up to pH 3.7, at above pH 3.7 it gives yellow colour. Hence, the acidity responsible below pH 3.7 which is due to mineral acids can quantify by using methyl orange in neutralisation reaction of acidic water and standard base.

Phenolphthalein gives faint pink colour above the pH 8.3, Hence, the total acidity responsible is due to mineral acids and carbonic acid (dissolved CO2) can quantify by using Phenolphthalein in neutralisation reaction of acidic water and standard base.

6. What is the end point for mineral acidity?

Orange to yellow

7. What is the end point for Total acidity?

Yellow to Faint Pink

8. Mention the substances responsible for getting acidity of the water.

Mineral acids like H2SO4, HCI, HNO3, etc., and dissolved CO2 (carbonic acid H2CO3).
