Engineering Chemistry Laboratory : 2. Determination of Alkalinity in Water Sample : Viva – voice questions & answers
VIVA – VOICE QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
2. Determination of Alkalinity in Water Sample
1.
What is alkalinity.
Acid
neutralising property (or) basic property of water is called alkalinity.
2.
What are the ions responsible for alkalinity to a water.
(i)
Hydroxide (OH)
(ii)
Carbonate (CO2-3) and
(iii)
Bicarbonate ions
3.
What are the indicators used in the titration of alkalinity.
Phenolphthalein
and Methyl orange indicators.
4.
What is the colour change of phenolphthalein indicator in alkalinity titration.
Disappearance
of pink colour.
5.
What are the reactions gets completed during the phenolphthalein end point.
OH-
+ H+ → H2O
CO2-3+
H+ → HCO-3
i.e.,
OH- ions are completely neutralized but CO2-3
ions are converted to bicarbonate ions.
6.
Why OH and HCO3 ions cannot exist together in water.
They
combine instantaneously to form CO2-3
ions.
i.e.,
OH- + HCO-3 → CO2-3
+ H2O
7.
What is the colour of methyl orange in a water sample having alkalinity.
Yellow
colour
8.
What are the ions gets neutralised in methyl orange end point and write the reaction.
HCO-3
+ H+ → CO2 + H2O
9.
How is alkalinity expressed?
mgs/lit
(or) ppm
10.
What are the ions responsible for alkalinity if P = 0.
Both
OH- and CO2-3 are absent. Alkalinity is due to
HCO-3 only.
11.
Name the ions responsible for alkalinity when P > 1/2 M.
Hydroxide
(OH-) and Carbonate (CO2-3)
12.
Name the ions responsible for alkalinity when P > 1/2 M..
Carbonate
(CO2-3) and bicarbonate HCO-3
13.
What is the pH range both in acidic and basic conditions of a
solution.
Acidic
pH : 0 - 6.9
Neutral
pH : 7
Basic
pH : 7.1 - 14
