CAUSEWAYS

Sometimes, the water way of a river carries very little discharge, but spread over a larger area. There may be also high flood discharge occasionally or no water in the river during most part of the year. Further, there may be insignificant traffic too. Therefore, it becomes un-economical to construct a bridge. It is constructed on less important routes so as to reduce the construction cost.

See Fig. 20. In such cases, a paved way in the form of a thick R.C.C. slab is constructed at or above the bed of the river for the pedestrians and the passage of vehicles. Such a bridge is called Causeway.

Abutments and thick boulders are provided to support the R.C.C. slab. It may also be called as submersible bridge which allows floods to pass over it.
