A conjunction is a word which connects two words, phrases or clauses. It makes the sentence compact and brief. It removes repetition.

A conjunction is a word which connects two words, phrases or clauses. It makes the sentence compact and brief. It removes repetition.

Conjunctions that are always used in pairs are called correlative conjunctions.

Eg. Either.... or, neither.... nor, both....and, whether.....or, not only.....but also.

When a conjunction connects two sentences of equal importance, it is called coordinating conjunction. Eg. And, but, yet, still, either...or, neither...nor, or, or else, otherwise

Cumulative conjunction:

It adds one statement to another. Eg. We worked hard and we succeeded.

Adversative conjunction:

It expresses the contrast. Eg. She is weak but she is enthusiastic.

Disjunctive conjunction:

It expresses the choice.

Eg. You should use your intelligence to feel happy or you will be sad.

Illative conjunction:

It expresses an inference.

Eg. Preventive measures have been neglected for the omicron spreads fast.

Subordinating Conjunctions:

If a conjunction connects a main clause and a subordinate clause, it becomes a subordinating conjunction.

Eg. If, because, since, for, unless, until, till, before, after, while, where, when, as, that, though, although, even though.

Condition:

If you are vaccinated, you will not fall sick.

Unless you try, you will not learn anything.

Concession

Though I had the necessary qualification, I was not selected.

A picture is a picture even if there is no aesthetics in it.

Result:

I was so enervated that I could scarcely smile.

I was so tired that I could not smile.

Purpose:

We plucked apples so that we could eat it.

We studied well so that we will be selected.

Cause or reason:

He may join the class since he is very much interested.

Raj is quiet because he has understood the power of silence.

He speaks well for he listens well.

He rushed as he is in a hurry.

Time:

My paternal grandfather passed away before I was born.

He came to the spot after I had reached.
