Introduction

The design and operation of a transmission line is greatly influenced by the voltage drop, line losses and efficiency of transmission system. All these factors related to transmission system are dependent on the line parameters i.e. Resistance (R), Inductance (L) and Capacitance (C) of the transmission line. In chapter 1 we have seen how the values of these parameters can be obtained. Depending on the values of these constants, the voltage drop along the line will be changed. The resistance is the important factor while considering power loss in the line and its efficiency.

A very important problem in the design and operation of a power system is the maintenance of the voltage within specified limits at various points in the system. In this chapter, we shall develope formulas which will give the values of a voltage, current and power at any point on a transmission line provided we know these values at one point, normally at one end of line. From these values we can calculate voltage regulation, line losses and efficiency of transmission line.
