INTRODUCTION

All the chemical reactions can be broadly classified into two types.

1. Irreversible reaction:

Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2

2. Reversible reaction

(a) Homogeneous reversible reaction

N2(g) + 3H2(g) 2NH3(g)

 (b) Heterogeneous reversible reaction

CaCO3(s) CaO(s) + CO2(g)

The reversible reactions are represented by two arrows in opposite directions.

The homogeneous reversible reactions can be studied using the law of mass action. But the heterogeneous systems require different methods. The phase rule, given by Willard Gibbs (1874), is used to study the behavior of heterogeneous reversible reactions.
