Properties, Uses of cement mortar

Mortar is mainly used as a binding material in brick or stone masonry.

PROPERTIES OF CEMENT MORTAR

1. Durability: It should be durable and easily workable.

2. Adhesion: It should have good adhesion with bricks, stones, etc.

3. Quick Hardening: It should set and harden quickly so that speed of construction may be maintained.

4. Penetration of Water: It should offer good resistance to the penetration of rain water.

5. No Cracks: It should not crack in the joints.

6. Appearance: It should be in a position to maintain its original appearance for long periods.

 

USES OF CEMENT MORTAR

1. Binding Material: Mortar is mainly used as a binding material in brick or stone masonry.

2. Plastering: It is used for plastering of surfaces of structures like walls, beams, columns, etc.

3. Floor Finishes: It is used for floor finishes, providing a hard and smooth covering surface.

4. Decorative Works: It is used as a binding material for decorative works like stone-facing, tile-facing, etc.

5. Pointing: It is used for pointing of masonry works.

6. Even Bed: Mortar is used to form an even bed for irregular surfaces of stones in a structure. Thus, it is used to distribute the super incumbent weight uniformly on the bed.
