Pumps - Classification According to the shape of the vanes of the impeller

1. Radial flow impeller, 2. Axial flow impeller, 3. Mixed flow impeller

Classification According to THE SHAPE OF THE VANES OF THE IMPELLER

1. RADIAL FLOW IMPELLER

It is also known as Straight Vane Impeller or Francis Vane Impeller. In this, the vane surfaces are generated by straight lines parallel to the axis of the rotation.

2. AXIAL FLOW IMPELLER

In axial flow pumps, the liquid flows through the pump impeller axially. These are used for large flow rates under low pressure head. These types of pumps are used for pushing liquid through big main pipe lines such as used for liquid supply to cities from reservoirs.

3. MIXED FLOW IMPELLER

It consists of an impeller having both the radial and axial flow components. It is ideal for low head, large capacity applications.
