(a) Read the following chart, and describe it. Interpret and analyse the data
in two paragraphs. (APR/MAY 2019)
State
wise energy capacity in India by Feb 2013 in MW
Ans:
The horizontal bar chart describes the state wise wind energy capacity of India
in February 2013. Wind is actually a form of solar energy. Winds are caused by
the heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the rotation of the Earth, and the
Earth's surface irregularities. For as long as the sun shines and the wind
blows, the energy produced can be harnessed to send power across the grid. The
wind energy is measured in megawatt. The chart is prepared according to a
descending order of mega watt production capacity. The state that stands first
in solar energy capacity is Tamil Nadu which is capable of producing 7154mw of
solar energy. The land feasible for wind energy production is available in
large quantities in Tamil Nadu. The second state is Gujarat which produces 3093
mw of solar energy. The third state is Maharashtra producing 2976 megawatt of
solar energy. The fourth is Rajasthan producing 2355 megawatt of solar energy.
Karnataka,
Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states produce 2113mw, 435 mw, 386 mw
and 39mw respectively. They produce solar energy comparatively less than the
production of other states. Some states do not produce solar energy. They
depend on their neighboring state for solar energy consumption. The solar
energy production is directly proportional to the feasible condition of the
place of production. The production and consumption varies in different states.
Some states consume and some states produce. The three main factors that
influence power output are: wind speed, air density, and blade radius. Wind
turbines need to be in areas with a lot of wind on a regular basis, which is
more important than having occasional high winds. If the conditions are
feasible, all states can produce solar energy as per their needs.

(b) Do you think the linking of rivers in India will help to solve water crisis
in the country? Analyse the question and write an essay in two paragraphs. In
around (16) (APR/MAY 2019) 200 words.
Ans:
The linking of rivers has many advantages and disadvantages. Let us see the
advantages first. It controls flood. It gives water for dry areas. It improves
irrigation and thereby it improves the production of food crops. Both the
people and the farmers will be benefitted with networking of rivers. The
farmers need not wait for monsoon. It improves transportation also. It makes
the land fertile. Hydro electricity can be produced from reservoirs constructed
near rivers. The rivers can be linked by canals and reservoirs.
The
linking of rivers has many disadvantages also. It should be done after getting
national and international consent. Thorough research has to be done by experts
because it causes changes in environment and it needs heavy shelling of funds
in crores. Rivers are gifts of God. The ancient civilization was found to
inhabit the areas near rivers. To block the natural flow of rivers and
diverting it may have negative effects in future which we cannot foresee. The
construction is a Herculean task and Himalayan endeavor. The constructions of
canals and reservoir may result in evacuation of houses by the inhabitants. The
lives of the people will be affected. The compensation given by the government
may not fulfill their needs. The construction may result in deforestation. The
adjacent lands may become swampy and agriculture may not be possible in those
lands. So the linking of rivers project has to be done at a small level after a
great a scrutiny. The interlinking of rivers in the Himalayan ranges and the
rivers from the South will have to be handled carefully. Rivers have been the
bone of contention for example Kaveri river has been a topic of dispute between
TN and Karnataka in the same way as Chambal river between Rajasthan and Madhya
Pradesh. So the economical remedies like creating ponds and renovating lakes
can be the solution for water crisis. "Save water and save lives"
should be everyone's motto.
