Prime Movers are devices which convert the energy from a natural source into mechanical work. Prime Movers are classified as:

1. Thermal Prime Movers

a) Steam Turbines b) Internal Combustion Engines c) Gas Turbines

2. Hydraulic Prime Movers (Hydraulic Turbines)

 

STEAM TURBINES

Steam Turbine is universally used as prime mover in thermal power plants.

Types of Steam Turbines

Steam Turbines are of two types: Impulse Turbine and Reaction Turbine. The main distinction of these two types is the manner in which steam is expanded as it passes through the turbine.
