WORKED EXAMPLES

Example 1 Find the average value and root mean square value of the waveform shown below.

Solution: It is a rectangular waveform and is symmetrical one. Hence we have to consider only half cycle.

Vave = Area of waveform for half cycle / Base

= vm × π / π

Squared waveform

Note: Observe the average and r.m.s values. They are equal. It is true only in case of rectangular waveforms. In all other cases r.m.s value is always greater than average value.

Example 2 For the trapezoidal waveform shown in the figure, determine (a) Average value, (b) R.M.S value

Solution: Let us apply here a graphical method. since it is symmetrical wave form we have to take only half cycle.

Note: We can apply the analytical method for the same problem. The equations for the wave form consists of three parts.

Part 1: Equation of straight line from O to A.

Part 2: Equation of straight line from A to B

Part 3: Equation of straight line from B to C

Example 3 Find the r.m.s. value of the resultant current in wire which carries simultaneously a direct current of 10A and a sinusoidal current of peak value of 10A.
