Petrol, Diesel Engine | Cycle of operation
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: g. Internal combustion engines
As the name implies, a two-stroke cycle engine performs two strokes to complete one cycle in one revolution of the crankshaft. Necessarily, two strokes out of the four strokes of a cycle are to be eliminated. The two strokes that are eliminated are suction and exhaust strokes.
Petrol, Diesel Engine | Cycle of operation, Classification
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: g. Internal combustion engines
Four Stroke Cycle Engine: In the four stroke engine, there is one power stroke in every four strokes or during two revolutions of the crank. The four stroke engines are further classified as Four Stroke Petrol Engine and Four Stroke Diesel Engine according to the type of fuel used in the engine.
Internal combustion engines
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: g. Internal combustion engines
In petrol engines, the cylinder head also contains a spark plug for igniting the fuel-air mixture. But in diesel engines, the cylinder head contains nozzle for injecting the fuel into the cylinder.
Classification
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: g. Internal combustion engines
Thermal Prime Mover is a prime mover that is made to utilize thermal (heat) energy for conversion into mechanical work. Examples: Steam Engines, Steam Turbines, Gas Turbines, Diesel Engines, Petrol Engines.
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
Comparison of the characteristics of reciprocating pump and centrifugal pump is given below:
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
1. Radial flow impeller, 2. Axial flow impeller, 3. Mixed flow impeller
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
On the basis of the liquid inlet design, impellers are classified as Single Suction Type and Double Suction Type
Centrifugal Pumps
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
A Single Stage Pump is one in which the total delivery head is developed by a single impeller.
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
1. Volute Casing: The centrifugal pump has a stationary outer casing. It has an air-tight spiral passage surrounding the impeller. Hence, it is also known as Spiral Casing.
Principle, Types
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
Centrifugal Pump is a hydraulic machine with a rotating part called Impeller.
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
As the name suggests, a reciprocating pump having only one cylinder is known as Single Cylinder Reciprocating Pump.
Subject and UNIT: Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT IV: f. Pumps
If a reciprocating pump uses one side of the piston for pumping liquid, then it is known as a Single Acting Reciprocating Pump.
