Basic Civil & Mechanical Engineering: UNIT II: i. Stones

Testing of building stones

1. Hardness Test: Hardness of a stone is tested by a pen knife which should not produce a scratch on a hard stone. Hardness Number is determined using Mohr's scale of hardness.

TESTING OF BUILDING STONES

1. Hardness Test: Hardness of a stone is tested by a pen knife which should not produce a scratch on a hard stone. Hardness Number is determined using Mohr's scale of hardness.

2. Impact Test: It is carried out on Impact Testing Machine to find the toughness of a stone.

3. Test for Crushing Strength: This test is carried out in a Compression Testing Machine.

4. Fire Resistance Test: The stone, which is free from Calcium Carbonate, can resist fire. The presence of Calcium Carbonate in the stone can be detected by dropping a few drops of dilute Sulphuric Acid which will produce bubbles.

5. Abrasion Test: It is carried out to determine the percentage of wear of stones used for the construction of road. It is carried out in Deval's Attrition Testing Machine.

6. Acid Test: In this test, a specimen stone is kept for 1 week in the solution of Sulphuric Acid and Hydrochloric Acid. The corners of stones with high alkaline content turn roundish. Also, loose particles will get deposited on its surface.

7. Microscopic Test: This is a Geologist’s test. In this test, the sample of stone is subjected to microscopic examination to study the properties, namely, Mineral Constituents, Texture of Stone, Average Grain Size and Presence of Pores, Fissures and Veins.
