Numerous types of automobiles are available in the world. Automobiles are classified in the following ways based on load capacity, fuel, suspension system, body system, etc.

1. Purpose

• Passenger vehicle       Car, Station wagon, Jeep, Bus

• Goods vehicle            Truck, Pick-up

• Special purpose        Ambulance, Fire engine, Army vehicle, Concrete mixer

2. Load Capacity

• Light motor vehicle         Car, Jeep, Motorcycle

• Light transport vehicle    Pickup, Station wagon

• Heavy duty vehicle       Bus, Truck, Tractor

3. Number of Wheels and Axles

• Two wheeler       Motor cycle, Scooter, Moped

8. Position of Engine

• Engine in the Front Side:

Most of the vehicles have engines in the front.

Example : Most of the cars, buses and trucks.

• Engine in the Rear Side:

Very few vehicles have engines located in the rear.

Example : Nano car.
