CHAPTER - 11

ACTIVE PASSIVE VOICE TRANSFORMATIONS

In active voice, the subject acts: for example

The scientist does the experiment.

In Passive voice, the subject is the recipient of the action, for example

The experiment is done by the scientist.

In Impersonal passive voice, the doer of the action need not be men- tioned.

The experiment is done.

What is the difference between active and passive voice?

The subject of the sentence is the doer of the action in active voice.

The subject of the sentence is the recipient of the action in passive voice.

If the doer is important, we use active voice.

If the action is important, we use passive voice.

What Is Active Voice?

The simple voice when the subject performs the action.

Subject + Verb + object = active

Eg. The dog + tore + the newspaper = active.

He + is listening to + you tube = active

He + sings = active voice without an object.

What is Passive Voice?

It is the opposite of active voice. The subject receives the action.

Eg. The newspaper was torn by the dog. (Passive)

YouTube is being listened by him. (Passive)

When there is no object, it cannot be changed into passive voice since it is in impersonal passive voice.
