Relative Permittivity (εr) or Dielectric Constant

Definition, Formula

Dielectric characteristics of a material is determined by its dielectric constant. It is a measure of polarisation in dielectrics.

RELATIVE PERMITTIVITY (εr) or DIELECTRIC CONSTANT

Dielectric characteristics of a material is determined by its dielectric constant. It is a measure of polarisation in dielectrics.

Definition

It is the ratio of absolute permittivity of the medium (ε) and permittivity of free space (ε0).

Dielectric constant ε= Absolute Permittivity (ε) / Permittivity of free space (ε0)

εr = ε / ε0

Since dielectric constant is the ratio of same quantity, it is a dimensionless quantity and it has no unit.

The value of ε r= 1 for air or vacuum. Dielectric constant is also called as relative permittivity.
