Question : 1. Write a short note on underground substations.

Underground Substations

In some of the areas where population density is high and space available is limited at high cost then it is preferable underground All the equipments underground. As compared to other substations, the design of underground substation is complicated as many points are required to be taken into consideration. The size of the substation should be as minimum as possible proper access must be there for equipments and the operating personnel. It should have provision for emergency lighting and protection against fire. There must be good ventilation and provision for indication for excessive rise in temperature. The layout of underground substation is shown in the Fig. 8.5.1. The transformers and switches should be air cooled so that oil is not required to be brought in the premises of substation.
